Works at Trupanion | A day in the life of the Trupanion IT team

There is nothing we love more than to see happy and healthy pets. In fact, that's why we work so hard every day so that pets we all love can get the best in veterinary care. Many different departments are needed to help dogs and cats. Of course, with the advances in veterinary medicine, it is no surprise that the technology is at the forefront of animal health care. In this part of the Working at Trupanion series, we sat down with Trupanion IT support technician Sarah Scott to learn more about what it's like to work for technology in Seattle for a leader in the pet industry.

I am an IT support technician. This means that I support the daily function of Trupanion systems so that our call center works smoothly and our claims are processed. I can also do everything from supporting our own software, troubleshooting or learning why your computer might not start.

How did
are you starting your career at Trupanion?

This is a crazy story. I learned about Trupanion from an internet search when pet insurance was still fairly new to the market. I decided that I wanted to work at Trupanion and make a difference in the lives of pets.

It was a unique opportunity to put my passion for dogs and technology into a role. I applied to Trupanion when I saw an opening in the technology team. My application was unsuccessful and did not receive an interview.

Alternatively, I was still in school at the time so my classes probably would not have worked.

When I graduated from high school and college, I sent a cold e-mail to the head of the engineering department asking for an interview. I also highlighted my knowledge of technology and my passion for dogs.

Fortunately, the next morning I was invited to lunch by the department head. Then I was hired briefly and have worked at Trupanion for five years now.

What to do
do you like working remotely at Trupanion the most?

Do you remember the days when you would ask your high school teacher or college professor if you could have a lesson out on a nice sunny day? I finally get to take my work outside! I like to drink my morning coffee out on the porch and sit in the sun with my dogs.

The best thing about working remotely, however, is to stay home to raise my new puppy. For example, I compete in a variety of dog sports, and it is important to have a solid foundation for training.

Being at home has of course given me the chance to bind and train my puppy. It has been great to do short mini-workouts throughout the day.

If I did not have the opportunity to work remotely at Trupanion, I would not have been able to raise and train my puppy, as I do right now.

What to do
do you love your role the most?

I love my team at Trupanion. Fortunately, my team is great at supporting each other. I have also learned a lot since I started my career here at Trupanion. Of course I have my team to thank for that, we always help each other to learn and grow.

Furthermore, technology is something that is always changing and my team is always ready to share their knowledge and help other team members.

What is it?
favorite part of your day?

Oddly enough, my favorite part of my day is my team's daily meeting. As we now work remotely, we have daily meetings to check in with each other and go through all the difficulties to save technical problems. I love working with my team and since I can not see them in person, this is the next best thing. I miss seeing them all in the office.

What is it like working for tech in Seattle on the Trupanion IT team?

I work on the tech desk team which is only a small part of the larger IT team here at Trupanion.

For example, the tech desk team is what you call when your computer does not start or the mouse does not move. My team is a small and close group of team members.

When we're not working and actively trying to solve head problems, you can find us exchanging memes, video game reviews, and the latest technology news.

I'm a pretty nerdy chic and appreciate anything related to video games and computer technology, so I get to chat all about the tech with people who understand my tech words and languages.

During the work we tend to work together as a team and we are always willing to jump in and help each other if needed.

Of all the places I have worked, the Trupanion tech desk is my absolute favorite. We always have each other's backs and it's great to have a team that supports you.

What to do
do you like the work you do most?

I love that my passion for dogs and technology collides in my role.

For example, the work I do to make the Trupanion systems work smoothly helps pets get the best veterinary care they can get.

By "keeping the systems running and handling smoothly" I help save the lives of the pets. While you get your computer turned on again after it's turned off, it may not seem like saving pet life right now, if I go back and see the big picture of Trupanion's mission, I'm saving pets' lives.

That's what I value most.
