Workers in California nearly tripled in May

The California Workers’ Compensation Institute reported on Wednesday that the number of claims on covid-19 nearly tripled in May.

The latest figures show that after reaching a 10-month low of 1,303 applications in March this year, the figure increased by almost 83% to 2,381 applications in April, and then jumped 182% in May to 6,704 applications, resulting in in a five-fold increase in covid- 19 claims volume under the spring wave, according to a bulletin.

As the Division of Workers’ Compensation still receives COVID-19 claims from these three months, CWCI said that after reviewing late-reported claims, it projects a total of 7,911 claims for May, 2,524 for April and 1

,344 for March.

“While both reported and forecast covid claims figures have evolved from the lowest level in March, the number of covid claims is still well below the record high recorded in January this year, as the latest update shows that there were 54,165 covid 19 applications reported for January, while the institute’s final forecast claim for that month is now 55,248, says CWCI.

The CWCI said that COVID-19 claims have accounted for 17.3% of all workers’ compensation claims since the start of the pandemic. It said 269,756 COVID-19 claims had been filed since March 2020.
