Even if you have probably shopped to find the best car, home or rental insurance, there may still be one remaining item on your insurance to-do list: get a life insurance policy.
The process of getting a life insurance policy is no different from what you are used to: Find a company you trust and work with a trusted professional to determine how much coverage you need.
But with some life policies, there is an important difference: you must get a medical examination for life insurance. Keep reading to find out how it works and what to expect.
What is a life insurance survey?
A life insurance medical examination, more commonly referred to as a "paramedical examination" by insurance personnel, is an opportunity for your life insurance company to review your medical history and gather information for your life insurance application.
There are usually two steps in this examination: an oral questionnaire and an examination performed by a health care professional, usually a health care professional or a nurse.
Why do I need a life insurance degree?
Just as an insurance agent asks questions about your vehicle and your driving habits when quoting a car insurance policy, your life insurance company wants to learn more about you before issuing a life insurance policy. An exam helps them to:
- Verify the information you originally provided when applying for a life insurance policy.
- Get a more complete medical history. The questionnaire goes into more detail about your family's medical history.
- Identify any underlying conditions. A more in-depth picture of your medical history and results from your blood work may reveal a condition that you were not aware you were at risk of or may already have ̵
But not all life insurance policies require you to do a life insurance survey. Life policies under $ 100,000 usually require you to just fill out an application and answer several questions before it is reviewed by an insurer. 1 Your agent will help you fill out the application, you will sign it and your agent will submit it

What can I expect?
A life insurance examination goes a little more in-depth than a regular health check at your primary care physician. In addition to taking your height, weight, blood pressure and temperature, expect to have blood drawn and a urine test completed.
This survey is often done at home. Once you and your agent have submitted your application, you will be contacted by a paramedic who will schedule a time that suits you to complete your degree.
The exam probably takes between 30 minutes and an hour. If you need to follow a few steps during preparation, such as not eating 12 hours before your exam, it is best to do so. The results of your life insurance medical examination will be used to determine your final eligibility and premium.
