Viewpoint: Work environments are evolving | Business insurance



Working life and the form it takes when we go beyond the pandemic continues to develop. To get a sense of where it is, we asked Business insurance “Winner of Break Out Award 2022: What lasting effect does the pandemic have on your way of working? While some of the answers were what you would expect, others were quite surprising.

Technology has been a crucial tool in the pandemic and will continue to be so, as many laureates reported. It facilitated the immediate transition to teleworking and forced many to take advantage of video technologies such as Zoom and Teams. While e-mail and telephone communications had been widespread before the pandemic, many winners reported that video calls have become important, enabling them to stay in touch, not only with colleagues, but with business partners and customers on a regular basis face-to-face.

In a relationship business, the ability to connect much easier and more effectively with so many more people around the world is a lasting effect for many. Others noted how much more productive they can be when they do not hop on an airplane every few days. Some business trips will come back, but some will not be more winners suggested. Most winners said they had become a better communicator due to digital addiction. Virtual meetings are therefore likely to continue.

But Zoom and Team̵

7;s fatigue is also real. Techniques that can help build relationships can also drive people further apart, and although back-to-back video calls increase productivity, they can be time consuming and may not be the solution to everything. As one laureate said, “I have seen people respond very positively to clearly written and concise emails instead of taking up their time.”

Some laureates reported that the digital shift and telecommuting environment have given them a newfound appreciation for personal interactions and for being in the office. Whether you collaborate with colleagues, build a team culture or train new employees, some work can best be done in person. Bringing in new employees remotely can, for example, be a challenge when they have to adapt to a new role and industry. Just because some work and exercise can be done at a distance does not mean that it should necessarily do so. Activities such as brainstorming and negotiating with clients can lose some of their effectiveness when done remotely. And what happened to the impromptu conversation over coffee?

An important part of this year’s winner can be to build sustainable personal contacts, whether personally or remotely, will continue to be an important part of the industry.

Having a flexible and flexible approach is another important characteristic. Many awards said that they appreciated the flexibility that remote and hybrid work models have introduced. As one of the honorees said: “In the past, you would like to wait until everyone was together to strike something. Now the world is your oyster, no matter where anyone is geographically.”

This adaptability and flexibility, not to mention resilience, has led this year’s cohort of winners along their already impressive career paths through one of the most unpredictable events in the industry’s history. Perhaps a lasting effect of the pandemic on how they work is that there is no one-size-fits-all approach.
