Understanding California's Open Enrollment Under Obamacare
Thanks to the Affordable Care Law Plan, more commonly passed by Obamacare, millions of eligible Americans are able to purchase health insurance through the Health Insurance Marketplace. During a period called Open Enrollment, those who are eligible have access to affordable health care for both themselves and qualified family members. In the state of California, Open Enrollment begins on November 1
For those applying for health insurance, there are a few things to note about ACA plans through Marketplace. First of all, these plans are limited to personal, individual or family use. Entrepreneurs cannot use this website to find group health insurance or coverage plans for their employees. While California employees may be eligible as an individual to apply for coverage through Marketplace, companies may not provide benefit plans through these services.
Coverage Options Under Open Registration
When the registration window opens, there are three options that California residents have when choosing coverage. They are as follows:
- Residents Can Buy a Plan Through Covered California: If your total household income falls between 128% and 400% of federal poverty, you can sign up through the Marketplace to qualify for a tax deduction (which can help lower the total cost of the premiums.
- Residents can change or renew a current plan: When open registration takes place, there is the option to change or renew an existing plan.If you want to keep what you already have, you do not need to take any further steps. You may have to change plans because your provider is leaving the coverage network or if your medications are no longer covered by the plan.
- Residents can sign up for Medi-Cal: For those whose income is below 128% of the Federal Poverty Level, you will to qualify for Medi-Cal This is Medicaid for California residents.
Coverage not limited to open registration
Majority of Health Insurance Companies California relies on an open registration program to register new people. There are some exceptions to this practice. For anyone who is eligible to receive Medi-Cal, registration can be made at any time. In addition, families who qualify to participate in the child health insurance program do not have to wait for open registration to place their children under care coverage.
