Twitter will pay $ 150 million to settle with the United States regarding privacy, security breaches

(Reuters) – Twitter Inc. has reached an agreement with US authorities regarding allegations that they have distorted the “security and integrity” of user data between May 2013 and September 2019, according to court documents filed on Wednesday.

Twitter will pay $ 150 million as part of the deal, according to the documents.

The deal was announced by the Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission.

In the complaint, the government said that Twitter violated the FTC law and a 2011 agreement with the agency by incorrectly presenting to users how their information was used and how it was secured.

“In particular, while Twitter told users that they collected their phone numbers and email addresses to secure their accounts, Twitter failed to reveal that they also used user contact information to help advertisers reach their preferred audience,”

; the complaint said.

Twitter did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In addition to the monetary settlement, the agreement requires Twitter to improve its compliance practices.
