Memorial Day Weekend marks the beginning of the boating season! With the summer ahead, it's time to get on the water and enjoy the fun boat days. There are still 1
Life jackets are boating. According to the US Coast Guard, 76% of boat deaths in 2017 were caused by drowning and 84% of victims did not wear life jackets. Although regulations regarding life jackets vary depending on your condition, it is recommended to wear a life jacket when you are aboard a ship. It is also a good idea to make sure your life jacket fits well:
- Check the size and weight recommendations
- Make sure the life jacket is firmly attached
- Check if there is excess space above the life jacket openings and make sure that the jacket does not ride up over the face.
You should also ensure that there are enough life jackets for everyone on your boat.

Take a safety course
Taking a certified boat course is recommended if you are on the water this summer. It is a good way to gain knowledge about laws and security. Knowing the road rules can help prevent accidents while on your boat.
Prepare before you leave
Before starting your boat, make sure you are prepared for events that may occur on the water. Some things you should check include:
- Life jackets
- First Aid Kit
- Correct upholstery and change of clothes
- Share your whereabouts with someone you trust
- What your emergency plan is
- Emergency lights
- Fuel Levels
- The Navigation System Works
Before your first voyage on the water, take your boat through a de-winterization to prepare for the upcoming season.
Never drink while driving, and that includes operating a boat. In most states it is illegal to use a boat when your BAC is above 0.08%. Alcohol complicates assessment and reaction times, which can lead to a dangerous situation. Instead of drinking while on board, you choose to drink once ashore and safely and responsibly. Alcohol can jeopardize the safety of those on board and others on the water.
