The “Top Gun” writer family says: Not so fast, Maverick!

The family of the author whose article inspired the Tom Cruise movie “Top Gun” from 1986 sued Paramount Pictures for copyright infringement over this year’s best-selling sequel “Top Gun: Maverick”, according to Reuters.

The lawsuit, filed in the Los Angeles federal court, alleges that the studio failed to regain the rights to Ehud Yonay’s 1983 “Top Guns” article from the family before releasing the “derivative” sequel.

The lawsuit against Shosh Yonay and Yuval Yonay, who live in Israel and are Ehud’s widow and son, is seeking unspecified damages, including profits from “Top Gun: Maverick”, and to block the distribution of the film or additional sequels.

Paramount said in a statement: “These allegations are unfounded, and we will defend ourselves vigorously.”

“Top Gun: Maverick” is the biggest ticket success of the year, generating $ 291 million in North America and $ 548.6 million globally in the first 10 days after release.
