A man in Sacramento has been bitten by an insurance fraud involving his lost cell phones – which he claimed he had lost while either camping or fishing – and filed thousands of false insurance claims, the California Department of Insurance said Friday.
Thein Kevin Nguyen has been accused of a false number of fraudulent allegations in which he filed 35 fraudulent claims for cell phone losses, collected the proceeds from the allegations and then sold the cell phones he claimed to have lost, with profits from both insurance revenues and sales statement.
During the investigation, Nguyen stated that only three of the mobile phone losses during this time period were legitimate claims and that he received about 25 replacement Samsung mobile phones as a result of his fraudulent actions.
Mr. Nguyen then admitted to detectives that he sold every phone on the Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist, which made more than $ 7,000 profit by selling cell phones. In total, Nguyen received approximately $ 24,000 in mobile phone replacement over three years.
