The Signet Jewelers unit determines a gender bias process



(Reuters) – Signet Jewelers Ltd. announced on Thursday a $ 175 million settlement for long-running gender bias disputes, which resolved on behalf of 68,000 female Sterling Jewelers employees that the retailer pay women less and promote them less often than men.

The settlement averts an arbitration proceeding on September 5 that would have continued on a cross-class basis, subjecting Sterling to potentially greater liability than if employees pursued individual claims.

Sterling’s brands include Kay Jewelers and Jared. The company denied the crime, and Bermuda-based Signet charged a $ 190 million pre-tax fee for the deal, which requires the approval of a private arbitrator.

Although the deal focused on salaries and promotions from around 2004 to 201

8, mainly for salespeople, the case attracted more attention after some female Sterling employees made sworn statements that they had been sexually harassed.

The jewelry industry “is more accessible to women than many, but not always as hospitable,” Joseph Sellers, an attorney for women at Cohen Milstein Sellers & Toll, said in an interview.

He said the deal “could have a ripple effect on other companies by paying attention to the problems these women face, and the correct answer that Sterling developed. We applaud the company for turning a corner.”

Signet’s CEO Gina Drosos said at a conference call that the agreement allows Signet to focus on having an “inclusive and very committed culture” while ensuring equal pay and diversity.

Sterling was originally indicted in 2008 and charged with violating Section VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Federal Equal Pay Act.

About $ 125 million from the settlement would go to class members, while the rest will cover legal fees and expenses.

In 2020, Signet reached a $ 240 million settlement for shareholder claims that they concealed allegations of sexual harassment against senior executives.
