A contractor in Leawood, Kansas, who rehabilitates the Firestone, Shankman and Michaelson buildings in Kansas City's Troost Commercial District continues to expose his workers to asbestos and other hazards in the workplace, a federal safety and health investigation found on June 29, 2021.  The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration cited Compass Resources LLC for failing to comply with federal requirements for respiratory protection, providing drinking water and sanitation facilities, and removing damaged power cables.
OSHA issued a repeated violation and eight serious violations 22 $ in penalties. The agency also issued a warning letter for asbestos and heat stress exposure.
Inspections conducted in November 2018, December 2020 and January 2021 resulted in further lawsuits against the contractor for inadequate personal protective equipment, exposure to asbestos and lead, electrical hazards, and inadequate safety programs.  The department has referred Compass Resources to fundraisers for non-payment of more than $ 186,337 in previous penalties.
