Lawmakers in Alabama are scheduled for Feb. 2 to consider a bill that would extend the Court of First Instance's right to disability or death benefits to wilderness firefighters employed by the Alabama Forestry Commission who meet certain conditions.
H.B. 94 would also specify that a volunteer firefighter or a member of an organized rescue team who dies of cardiac arrest, cerebrovascular accident or pulmonary edema within 24 hours of preparing to respond, respond or serve in their capacity in an emergency or exercise would probably be considered dead in the performance of his or her duties. The bill would be retroactive from January 1, 2019.
H.B. is also pre-formulated and scheduled for first reading on 2 February. 31
