Texas infertility presumption amid wave of first responder counts

Texas lawmakers are considering a bill that would make infertility suffered by some first responders a compensable condition under workers’ compensation.

SB 1878 would apply to firefighters and emergency medical technicians who regularly respond to the scene of calls involving fires or firefighting or to events involving the documented release of radiation or a known or suspected carcinogen. It states that infertility would be described as the inability to conceive within one year.

Texas lawmakers on Wednesday also introduced HB 4147, which would clear the red tape for first responders diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. It is the second bill this week.

Also introduced Wednesday in Wisconsin was SB 1

13, which would amend the state’s presumption law on post-traumatic stress disorder claims for police officers and firefighters to include emergency medical personnel, emergency medical practitioners, volunteer firefighters, correctional officers, emergency responders, coroners and coroners, and medical and forensic personnel.

In Maine, lawmakers on Wednesday introduced SB 1123, which would create a rebuttable presumption that a cardiovascular injury or illness or lung disease suffered by certain law enforcement officers is in the course of employment.
