I would like to tell the story of my dog, Sargon.
Sargon is a nine year old Rhodesian Ridgeback.
In January 201
Thus began our 11-month journey into Sargon's lameness. He was examined by two physiotherapists, two surgeons and a neurologist. He also had several X-rays, MRI, ultrasound and a CT scan before we finally determined the source of this lameness. Sargon was diagnosed with a nerve envelope tumor in the radial nerve.
On December 5, 2019, Sargon's leg was amputated.
Although the choice to amputate the leg was a difficult decision, we knew that the amputation would relieve his pain. What we were not sure was whether Sargon could return to her greatest joy of life, hiking.
His physiotherapists warned us that he might not be able to hike like a tripawd, but we wanted to give him a chance. We carefully built up his strength and now Sargon is back to hiking lengths of up to 15 km. We are a little more careful with the terrain we are dealing with, but we have our hiking animal back.
As we approach the first anniversary of his amputation, we are grateful for all the wonderful care he received. His Trupanion coverage enabled us to get to the root of his illness, without ever having to base our decision about his care, on finances.
Sargon continues to be in top shape with the help of his physiotherapists. We hope he will have many more years of hiking ahead of him.
Thank you for reading my story and thank you for helping to extend our time with our wonderful dog!
