OSHA deals with meat processing plants for COVID safety

Four connected meat processing plants that were investigated for alleged safety deficiencies in connection with covid-19 will have to create a contingency plan for infectious diseases and pay a fine of 14,502 USD, the American Occupational Safety and Health Administration announced on Friday.

After two inspections in April and May 2020, OSHA cited Swift Beef Co. in Greeley, Colorado, and JBS Green Bay Inc. in Green Bay, Wisconsin – part of JBS Foods USA Inc. – for failure to protect workers from coronavirus risk at four sites that saw covid-19 outbreaks and, in some cases, , hospital stays and deaths of employees.

JBS Foods’ subsidiaries and affiliates must now put together a team of companies and third-party experts to develop and implement an infectious disease preparedness plan for seven of its meat processing plants.

The team will include subject matter experts recommended by OSHA and the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, who represent the workers at the covered facilities.
