November 2018 E-news: New OSHA deadline for fall protection, agency news, Texas Trivia, recipe of the month & more!

New OSHA deadline for fall protection

Slips, trips and falls are some of the main causes of occupational injuries. They account for 20% of all deaths in the workplace, which inactivates injuries and days away from work in the general industry. With this in mind, you should be aware of changes to the OSHA regulations that will enter into force on 19 November 2018. The changes are part of a larger rewriting of the general standards for pedestrian work surfaces in the industry that came into force in 2017.

Specifically, the rewritten standards:

  • Clear definitions
  • Eliminated overly specific application conditions
  • Better organized requirements
  • Simplified general requirements
  • Adapted closer to the building standard and
  • Provided flexibility to use systems instead of personal fall protection systems.

The provisions for fixed ladders
As I said, one area that remained for later implementation was standards for fixed ladders. According to the revised standard, cages or wells for fall protection on fixed ladders higher than 24 & # 39; are no longer acceptable. However, there are intended regulations and a phasing-in period for the new regulations:

  • Fixed ladder systems installed before November 19, 2018 must have a cage, well, ladder safety system or personal fall arrest system
  • Fixed ladder systems installed it 19 November 2018 or later must be equipped with a personal fall arrest system or ladder safety system (cages or wells for fall protection are no longer acceptable).
  • When replacing any part of a fixed ladder, the replacement must be equipped with a ladder safety or personal fall protection system. contribute to these incidents. The most quoted citations during OSHA's 2017 financial year were for breaches of general requirements, including violation of cleaning (291 citations), followed by 122 citations for clean and dry floors and 53 citations for walkways without hazards.

The second most common citation was for failure to protect against fall risks along unprotected sides or edges that are at least 4 & # 39; above a lower level, including:

    • 205 citations for unprotected sides and edges
    • 55 citations for fall protection stairs
    • 49 citations for falls – holes
    • 26 citations for falls around dangerous equipment

    The Takeaway
OSHA continues to police slips, stumbles and falls with gusto. Based on the statistics, you should make sure to keep work surfaces and floors free from obstacles and slippery and falling risks. You should also make sure you have protection in place to avoid unprotected sides and edges.

Tips for saving money on medicines

The cost of medicines can vary greatly between pharmacies. Consumer Reports recently surveyed pharmacies to price five popular generic prescription drugs. Here are the results:

  • Healthwarehouse.com: $ 66
  • Costco: $ 150
  • Various Independents: $ 107
  • Sam & # 39 ;s Club: $ 153
  • Walmart: $ 518
  • Kmart: $ 535
  • ] Grocery Stores: $ 565
  • Walgreens: $ 752
  • Rite Aid: $ 866
  • CVS / Target: $ 928

To maximize your cost savings, Consumer Reports recommends to consumers:

  • Use online discounts. There are a number of websites that provide discount coupons or coupons for medicines, including:
    – GoodRx
    – Blink Health

On these websites you enter the name of the medicine you want to buy, dosage and quantity needed and where you live. It will provide coupons or coupons and identify pharmacies where you can use them.

  • Expand your shopping horizons. Shopping combined with using coupons can save hundreds of dollars every year. Also check out local convenience stores such as Costco & # 39 ;s and Sam & # 39 ;s pharmacies. The best deals are often available at these pharmacies. Neighborhood pharmacies and pharmacies for grocery stores were also much cheaper than the large regional pharmacy chains.
  • Ask pharmacies if they will honor coupons online. Pharmacies will almost always honor them, although you may have to be persistent to get pharmacies to use them, as pharmacies often run prescriptions through insurance automatically, even when you pay the retail cash price and use discount coupons it would cost less.

One Last
Consumer Reports recommends that once you find a pharmacy that consistently gives you a great deal on your medicine, it's a good idea to fill all your prescriptions there. That way, it's easier for them to detect "potentially dangerous interactions and other security issues."

If you start to notice that your pharmacy bills are rising significantly, it may be time to start shopping again. To keep track of this, regular checks are required to ensure that prices do not creep up.

  Padre Island

Texas Trivia

For almost its entire existence, Padre Island has remained an undeveloped wilderness. As the National Seashore strives to preserve the island in its natural state, visiting "la Isla Blanca" is a lot like going back to the past. Visitors can see Padre Island as it has been for most of its history and how it was described by early explorers.

The first permanent settlement on the island was at the southern tip of the island. This area was founded around 1804 by a Spanish priest, Padre Nicolas Balli, after whom the island is named. Before that, the only known people who had inhabited the island were nomadic Indians, Spanish troops or ships and the survivors of three shipwrecks on the island's shore in 1554.

From World War II to the Korean War, the northern part of Padre Island was used as a naval bomb site. In what year was the bombing area dismantled? Email us your answer . If you're one of the first three people to answer correctly, you'll win a $ 5 Whataburger gift card!
