Marsh McLennan reports higher emissions after travel resumes



Marsh & McLennan Cos. Inc.’s business travel carbon emissions in 2022 remained below pre-pandemic levels despite increasing 584% in 2021.

The brokerage’s Scope 3 emissions, which include emissions from commercial air travel, rose to 50,634 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2022, up from 7,398 tonnes in 2021, according to its environmental, social and governance report released on Friday,

But 2022 levels were down 36% from 2019 emissions levels, the report said.

“Although still below pre-pandemic levels, our emissions from business travel increased in 2022 as travel recovered, we returned to the office and resumed in-person meetings,” the report said.

The company expanded its data coverage for air travel-related emissions in 2022.

Marsh McLennan said it will continue to use virtual meeting tools to manage travel emissions and its green traveler program.

It also evaluates the use of sustainable aviation fuel to manage emissions from travel.
