One day in a loss control consultant, the closest in the insurance industry is to be a rock star. People love to see my name call on their phone or see me show off their business. My advice is always graciously accepted and appreciated, and tears are always fired when I leave.
Unfortunately, none of these things is true and would be written in "sarcasm" fonts if there were. Loss control is often a misunderstood part of the insurance industry. In reality, I am usually mistaken as a telemarketer or a door-to-door security vendor. I knew very little about loss control during my first decade in the insurance industry, but have found it to be a very challenging, rewarding and valuable aspect of the business.
I spent eleven years in the insurance department and it showed me the very real and devastating effect that accidents and poor security management can cause. I now use that knowledge to try to help policyholders improve their security procedures and reduce the risks that can cause a major problem to their employees, property or business.
Like many jobs, the loss control can be explained in simple terms. I visit a policyholder to learn about their history, business, products and property. I go through the property to see if I can make any suggestions to reduce the risk of injury, accidents or property damage that can seriously interfere with their business.
It sounds easy, but I am constantly surprised by the various dangers we see. On a certain day, I can tour a church meeting room followed by a craft brewery and a foundry pouring molten steel. Most recommendations I provide are simple, inexpensive solutions that can prevent major headaches. From controlling your railings to storing your color, we have been properly trained to improve safety in all environments.
More people learn the benefits that insurance trust consultants can provide and policyholders who understand how our department works really enjoy getting our call and seeing us at the door. A career in loss control is an interesting and rewarding way of giving value to insurance for people. I doubt that we will ever be treated as rock stars, but I have been known to play a small air guitar on request.
