March is National Kidney Month, making it a great time to take care of your health to reduce your chances of developing kidney disease. Your kidneys filter your blood to remove waste and extra water to create urine. They also make important hormones that produce red blood cells, promote bone health and regulate your blood pressure. Risk factors

Today, 37 million Americans suffer from kidney disease ̵

1; and most will not have symptoms unless their kidneys fail. There are many physical signs of kidney disease, but most people attribute other conditions to them. If you have one of these risk factors, you may be at risk for kidney disease:

  • Hypertension
  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • Be overweight
  • Family history of kidney disease

It is even more important to understand your kidney health in the midst of the pandemic. Kidney disease increases your risk of developing life-threatening complications of covid-19.

Kidney-friendly tips

Your kidneys are working hard for you, so it is important to take good care of them. Consider the following tips:

  • Test yourself. Regular screening for kidney damage or disease can help you keep track of your kidney health and prevent future damage.
  • Reduce over-the-counter drug use. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (eg ibuprofen) can cause kidney damage if taken regularly, so never exceed the recommended dose.
  • Regular training. Exercise helps lower your blood pressure and increase heart health – both critical factors in preventing kidney damage. Focus on being active for at least 30 minutes a day.
  • Eat a healthy diet and monitor your weight. Choose a low-sodium diet, avoid processed meats and focus on fresh ingredients such as cauliflower, blueberries, fish and whole grains.
  • Drink plenty of fluids. Water helps flush sodium and toxins from your kidneys. It is recommended that men get about 15 cups of fluid every day, and women need about 11 cups.

Snacks have a bad reputation, but they can be an important part of a healthy diet. It’s about choosing healthy snacks and looking at portion sizes.

Nutrition is the key to a healthy lifestyle. Eating healthy bites during the day provides the following benefits:

  • Healthy snacks provide nutrients. It can meet your daily nutritional needs. The best snacks consist of nutrient-dense foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy products and nuts.

  • Healthy snacks prevent overeating. It can reduce your hunger and the risk of overeating at meals.

Do not snack immediately before a meal, and only eat one snack if you are really hungry. Try to include the five healthy desk snacks below in your meal plan.
