Barry Zalma’s Insurance Claims Training

When I left my three-year enlistment in the US Army as a special agent for the US Army Intelligence Corps, in 1967 I returned home to California and found a job as an insurance trainee with Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company which is now part of a large insurance conglomerate. The Firefighters’ Trust expected its claims staff to be well trained, educated and experienced in claims management. My training took a full year before they let me deal with insureds and claimants without close supervision. The training consisted of:

  1. Read a text about insurance and claims management with the help of my claims supervisor.
  2. Ride with experienced claims adjuster who handles all industries written by the Firefighters Fund where I was assigned to observe only.
  3. I was asked to conduct interviews over the phone (something I had experience with from my time in the army.).
  4. I was sent to the Firefighters Foundation home office in San Francisco where I attended a full month of classroom training on:
    1. insurance,
    2. claims handling,
    3. reconstruction elements,
    4. medicine related to injuries,
    5. car repair,
    6. tort law,
    7. contract law,
    8. how to read an insurance policy,
    9. the terms of most policies, and
    10. negotiation techniques.
  5. After training, I was appointed desk adjuster – a very new thing at the time – negotiating small personal injury and property claims over the phone under close supervision.

Eventually, I proved my mettle and became a fully independent insurance adjuster with the help of my supervisors.

Modern American Injury Education

My experience as a claims consultant and insurance expert witness shows that most modern insurers have removed the training programs available to their claims staff, have eliminated their experienced claims staff due to attrition, and as a result have lost control of the claims business. As a result of the lack of education, insurance training and experienced adjusters, many insurance claims result in unhappy, often angry, policyholders which has increased litigation against insurers exponentially resulting in the insolvency of many insurance companies. By the year 2022, at least six insurance companies doing business in Florida have failed.

In my experience, claims handled by well trained, educated and experienced claimants resolve almost all claims quickly, fairly and to the satisfaction of the insured in first party claims and to the insured and claimant in third party claims.

After 55 years of actively handling insurance claims, insurance coverage, insurance fraud and bad faith matters as a claims adjuster, attorney, coverage attorney, consultant and expert witness, I have come to the conclusion that the insurance industry, if it is to survive as a profitable business, must return to requiring a claims staff of well-trained , trained, experienced and professional claims handlers.

Make your claims staff professional

Because the insurance claims industry is faced with a lack of education, knowledge and experience in its claims business. Because claims professionals are the ones who keep the promises of an insurance company’s policies, claims professionals are the key to a successful insurer.

The best way to avoid the tort of bad faith is that every insurer requires all members of its claims staff to be professional and thoroughly trained, knowledgeable and experienced who must treat every insured and claimant fairly and with the utmost good faith.

In my desire to help the insurance industry return to professional claims professionals, I will begin the new decade on January 2, 2023, I will be available, for a small fee, to share the knowledge I have gained over the past 55 the years to the claims staff of all insurers who ask.
