Infinite possibilities are available in the insurance industry

I have previously written a few times about how much I enjoy the insurance industry and how I managed to find a home in 2001. But there is no reason to continue writing about me. Let me give you a 30,000 foot overview of all the career opportunities that exist in our important and meaningful industry! If you are looking for a career change and have not considered insurance, you may be surprised.

To begin with, since I work in an agency setting, let's review a number of typical positions in an agency: [[19659003] Agent / Producer : These are sellers who are responsible for finding new accounts, meeting them to review their insurance needs and then provide them with an ongoing insurance program tailored to their exposures.

  • Account Manager / Customer Service Representative : These are the service-determined backbone of all agencies and handle many daily aspects of insurance programs. They complement policy changes, respond to billing issues, address deck issues, application claims, etc. In short, they only respond to all customer questions that arise!
  • Then you have insurance companies themselves and they have a number of different departments with different positions within each department. These include:

    • Sales / Marketing Representatives : These people establish relationships with the agencies in their territories and work with them to write new accounts and maintain existing accounts. They are also a main contact in case the agency has any problems.
    • Underwriters : Underwriters work with their assigned affiliate partners to monitor the business book, help get new accounts written from a pricing and authorization point of view, and examine accounts that may have issues with claims. They are also a great source of information for agencies when coverage issues arise and unique situations present themselves.
    • Claims adjusters : perhaps some of the most important people in the equation, adjusters work with clients and creditors to pay claims based on the insurance cover that is in place at the time of the loss. Their service – along with their checklist – is a big part of what you pay for when you buy an insurance.

There are also a lot of other positions at the insurance company level. Career is available in marketing, information technology, risk management / loss control, customer service, legal, human resources and premium audit.

In short, if you are looking for a position in an industry that is always evolving, relationships are valued, and do not go anywhere (no matter how the economy does), do yourself a favor and consider the insurance industry!
