How to send a complaint to the New York Financial Services Department about your late, denial, and badly treating insurance company | Property Insurance Coverage Law Blog

Linda A. Lacewell, Superintendent of the New York State Department of Financial Services

Since the New York Department of Insurance was abolished in October 2011, the New York State Department of Financial Services has overseen and regulated all insurance companies doing business in New York. The Financial Services department seeks to ensure fair and equitable relationships between insurers, agents and policyholders on all insurance transactions. The financial services department also accepts and investigates any complaints against agents or insurers.

In order to file a complaint against an insurer, the policyholder must use the consumer complaint within the financial service department. The Ministry of Finance's portfolio can be found here . The consumer complaints request information about the complainant, complaints and any documentation in relation to the complaint. When submitting, the Ministry of Finance will investigate the complaint and request that any entity mentioned in the complaint submit to the department any information concerning the complaint.

If policyholders have any questions, they can call the financial services department at (800) 342-3736. They can also send the department an email to consumers@dfs.ny.gov.

If you are not sure of your insurance rights or if you have any questions about your policy benefits, Merlin Law Group attorneys have licensed and practiced in New York to assist you.
