How to overcome overeating during the holiday celebrations



The holiday seems to consist of one big meal or party after another. First up is the Thanksgiving feast, with turkey, stuffing, sauce and pumpkin pie. Then comes a parade of holiday parties, delicious desserts, Christmas ham, goose or beef, fantastic bread and, of course, eggnog.

Traditionally, the holiday is a time to indulge and celebrate with friends and family. It can be very tempting to eat too much during this special time of year, and it can result in you packing up unwanted pounds. But there are ways to overcome overeating and avoid weight gain during the holidays.

Drink water

Carry a water bottle or glass of water with you. The more water you drink, the less likely you are to eat and the fewer calorie drinks you will consume. This includes alcoholic beverages, which can be extremely high in calories. As an added bonus, drinking water increases metabolism.

Do not go out hungry

Before going to a party or festive party, take a healthy snack with fruit and whole grains. For example, put some almond butter on a slice of wholemeal toast and a small bowl of blueberries. This removes the appetite and makes you less likely to overeat.

Another option is to ask the hostess for the recipe (a big compliment) so you can make it yourself at home.

Go for a walk before dessert

After a big holiday meal, postpone the dessert and go for a walk first. This can be a fun activity with family and friends that gives everyone some exercise. It also gives your stomach time to tell your brain how full it is before you start looking at desserts.
