How to avoid winter blues

Instead of living with the condition, you have options to elevate your mood.

The Science Behind the Winter Blues
Your body's internal clock is a 24-hour cycle, called the "circadian rhythm", the sleep-wake cycle. The reduced light during the winter months can affect this rhythm, making you feel more lethargic or less optimistic and hopeful than you are during the spring and summer. When the circadian rhythm disappears, it affects more than your sleep and affects your entire system. Thankfully, you can do something about negative emotions during the winter months.

Take walks
Since winter blues is associated with a lack of sunlight, you need everything you can get! Go for walks as often as you can during hours of sunshine. Go for walks often. If it's raining or snowing, you can still lift your spirits with a walk, but make sure you're warmly dressed and wearing boots with a non-slip sole.

Be active
Instead of spending the winter vegetating in the couch in front of the TV, go out and get involved in life. Go to the cinema, visit friends, invite others and go to the gym to exercise as often as possible. The more active you are, the better you will feel.

Take on a winter trip
If you usually suffer from winter blues, make a winter trip a tradition. Head to a warmer state or country and spend some time enjoying the rays to break up the winter and make it more bearable.
