Florida behavioral health facility cited over workplace violence

A Florida behavioral health and substance abuse facility has been sued for failing to take adequate steps to protect workers from incidents of workplace violence.

The US Occupational Safety and Health Administration announced Thursday results from an investigation into Wekiva Springs Hospital in Jacksonville that found 182 alleged incidents of workplace violence in 2022, 70% of which required police intervention. The hospital is part of UHS of Delaware Inc.-Wekiva Springs Center LLC.

The incidents included hospital workers suffering broken bones, concussions and other injuries in attacks by patients, according to OSHA. The agency said in one case, a patient repeatedly hit an employee̵

7;s head into an air conditioning unit.

OSHA cited the company with a serious violation for failing to provide a workplace free of safety hazards that could cause serious physical injury or death and issued a proposed fine of $15,625.

An administrative law judge found earlier this year that UHS of Delaware Inc. did not do enough to protect workers from incidents of workplace violence at a Massachusetts behavioral health facility.
