A man tasked with fighting the flames has been accused of fanning them instead when authorities accused a Florida firefighter of setting fire to his own house to collect insurance.
According to the online news site ClickOrlando.com, a Brevard County firefighter has been arrested for allegedly attempting to burn down his house on September 3, 2019, when Hurricane Dorian landed in that part of the state.
The firefighter, Don Slayman, told investigators that he parked his golf cart in the garage next to some gasoline he stored for a family member and then noticed smoke. But when he was interviewed months later, he said he was supplying gas to a generator and "there was lightning and fire everywhere," ClickOrlando said.
His wife filed an insurance claim for more than $ 430,000 in home value, even though the home was only valued at $ 280,000.
He was arrested on Friday and facing charges of arson for a home and burning for deceive.
