Facebook regulates fees for discrimination of employees



Facebook Inc. will pay up to $ 14.25 million to settle a US Department of Justice that accused social media companies of discouraging US workers from seeking certain services in favor of foreign applicants, the department said on Tuesday.

Separately, the US Department of Labor said it had reached a related agreement with the company.

The DOJ said the settlement resolves a December 2020 lawsuit alleging that from at least January 1, 2018 to at least September 18, 2019, Facebook routinely reserved jobs for temporary visa holders through the "permanent work certificate" program. Critics have said the Visa Act makes it too easy to replace American workers with cheaper foreign labor.

The claim stated that, contrary to its usual recruitment methods, Facebook's recruitment methods were designed to discourage US workers from applying for certain positions, for example by requiring applications to be submitted only by mail, refusing to consider US workers applying for the job and employ only temporary visa holders.

The department accused the company of deliberately discriminating against American workers on the grounds of citizenship or immigration. status in violation of the Immigration and Nationality Act.

The award consists of a $ 4.75 million penalty and up to $ 9.5 million to be paid to eligible victims of Facebook's alleged discrimination, the department said.

Facebook did not respond to a request for comment.
