Examples of home insurance claims and how to prevent them.

Homeowners come with joy and sometimes distress. When accidents and disasters occur, you may need to file a home claim to get things back to normal.

Our experts have seen it all. So we share four of the best homeowners' claim examples and tips to protect your space – starting today.

1. Wind and hail. Damage from tornadoes, strong winds, hurricanes, thunderstorms and hail is one of the prime examples of homeowners insurance.

What you can do: Trim low hanging or dead branches that can damage your home's roof, siding, or windows. Place trash cans, ladders, lawns, bicycles and home projects in a garage or protected area so that debris does not blow into your home and cause damage.

2. Fire and lightning damage. Fire and lightning damage are common and can be costly. But you can help reduce the risk by assessing your space and your risks.

What you can do: Start with surge protection and outlet safety. Use extension cords sparingly and never connect one extension cord to another. Avoid using room heaters as they can increase the risk of fire and keep things such as curtains and furniture at a safe distance from underfloor heating.

Safety at outlet is especially important during storms. Did you know that a lightning temperature can reach 50,000 degrees? If your home is affected by a storm, there may be a power outage that could lead to fire. To be safe, disconnect devices before storms enter.

3. Water damage and freezing. Whether due to rain, a cracked pipe or a leak, water damage is a common home insurance claim.

What you can do: Inspect hoses and taps regularly, including those connected to the dishwasher, washing machine, and refrigerator. Also inspect your sump pump annually. In the bathrooms, seal around showers and bathtubs to prevent leaks. Outdoors, clear gutters and ensure that downpipes drain at a sufficient distance from the house, and plant trees away from the house to prevent root damage to the ground, underground pipes, septic tanks and sprinkler pipes.

4. Theft and vandalism. The FBI reported more than 1

.1 million burglaries in the United States in 2019 – making home theft the leading cause of burglary.

What you can do: Start by reading our 11 effective tips for preventing home theft. Install home security cameras or alarms. Keep windows and doors locked and keep the outside of your home well lit. If you are traveling, ask a neighbor to keep an eye on your property. In addition, if you keep a list of large items in your home, along with receipts and photos, you can expedite the claim process.
