The U.S. Department of Justice received more than $ 5.6 billion in settlements and judgments from civil cases involving fraud and false claims against the government under the False Claims Act for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2021, it said.
in its statement on Tuesday that this was the second largest annual sum in FCA's history, and the largest since 2014. It reported more than $ 2.2 billion in settlements and judgments for the fiscal year 2020.
The DoJ said of the more than 5 , $ 6 billion in settlements and judgments for fiscal year 2021, more than $ 5 billion relates to matters involving the healthcare industry, including pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers, healthcare providers, hospitals, pharmacies, hospice organizations, laboratories and physicians. That amount does not reflect additional funds recovered for state-owned Medicaid programs, it said. During the same period, the government paid $ 237 million to individuals who exposed fraud and false claims by filing these measures, the department said.
