Does Your Home Insurance Cover Turkey Day Terrors? – Blog for the law on property insurance

Thanksgiving is a time for food, family and friends. Unfortunately, it can also be a time of fires, home robberies or even food poisoning. Even if there is no such thing as "Thanksgiving Insurance", there are homeowners and renters insurance! Unlike Halloween, holiday insurance claims are usually caused by the homeowners themselves. So, before you head out to buy your turkey, take a minute to review your homeowner's insurance policy to make sure you're covered by some of the most common Thanksgiving Turkey Day Terrors.

Turkey Fires: The National Fire Protection Association says Thanksgiving Day is the leading day for house fires, with three times as many occurring on Thanksgiving as any other day of the year. It is important to review your homeowner or tenant insurance to ensure you have at least HO-2 or wide-body protection ̵

Online Shopping: If you're like me and do not want to visit malls with everyone and their mom on Black Friday, you find out that you are doing your holiday shopping online. Many homeowners insurance policies offer coverage for cyber exposure, also called identity theft protection. This provides financial compensation for the costs associated with the theft of digital information and assets up to the limit of your insurance. If your homeowner's insurance does not include coverage for cyber exposure, there may be optional coverage that you can add.

Theft: Unfortunately, the holiday period may see an increase in home robberies. Thieves know that homes are often empty for several days at a time and take advantage of this. Your home insurance can help cover the costs of a burglary. Hopefully, you will never fall victim to a home burglary. Still, you should be aware of what your homeowner's policy covers and be sure to document your home inventory in advance to expedite the complaint process.

Here are some tips to keep your home safe when you're away:

  • Keep your travel plans away from social media. This can be difficult in a time where we share everything on social media, but consider waiting until you are back in town so that the wrong person does not become aware of your absence. Trust me! Your followers will really be fine if they do not know what your mother's Thanksgiving spread looks like until the following Sunday.
  • Turn on the lights and use motion detectors for outdoor lighting.
  • Ask a neighbor or friend to keep an eye on your home and pick up all mail so it does not pile up and tip burglars.
  • As an extra precaution, invest in an outdoor security camera that you can monitor anywhere.

Holidays are meant to be a happy time of year where we gather with friends and family to celebrate. As with any major holiday or life event, it is a good idea to review your homeowner's or tenant's insurance policy to fully understand what is or is not covered.
