Dozens of private investigators, security guards and electronic security companies across the country found themselves wearing the other shoe as victims of an elaborate embezzlement system by their insurance agent.
Vicki Boser founded InsuranceTek Inc. in 2003, specializing in helping small. companies operating in high-risk areas to secure insurance to cover their business operations.
As the owner of InsuranceTek, Ms. Boser find companies that were willing to insure the high-risk companies, and if necessary find a company to finance the premium payments. She was obliged to collect premium payments from clients and deliver them to insurance companies, but prosecutors said that when she collected some of the payments, she created false insurance certificates and made her clients believe that they were insured.
Ms. Boser was sentenced to two years in prison on Tuesday after pleading guilty to fraud in connection with the theft of premium payments from customers. She was ordered to pay $ 273,137 in compensation to eight companies or insurance brokers she cheated on.
In a press release, federal prosecutors said Ms. Boser spent the stolen money on gambling at casinos in the area – the behavior that U.S. District Judge James L. Robart called "classic in terms of embezzlement from customers."
