Coalition of Disaster Fighters Strikes Out of Park | Property Insurance Law Team Blog



The Coalition of Disaster Responders (CDR) held its annual meeting with Captain Anderson in Panama City Beach. I love Panama City, Florida. I lived there in the 1970s when my father was captain of the Coast Guard Cutter Dependable. I’m still a 35 year old member of St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club, located down in “the Cove” in Panama City. I had the honor of being CDR’s keynote speaker yesterday.

CDR is about quality restoration construction. It’s not about “how to get rich by using” propaganda that gives bluffing sales arguments and inferior construction. Many restoration contractors get caught up in false hopes. There is a big difference in the culture of quality and legal restoration work compared to the scams with managed insurance repair networks and restoration gurus that promise quick riches. I have run 38 marathons, and my six best times just over three hours came from slow starts and fast goals. Doing things right takes time.

This conference was by invitation only. The CDR Entrepreneurs Conference was not about trying to make big profits for congressmen with false promises of quick riches that an entrepreneur feels they will miss if not for attending the conference. The CDR conference was not about hearing from alleged “experts”

; who are not the most reputable in the field but who “pay to play” and get highlights at a conference. There were not the “hot beautiful model women” hired by conference sponsors who lured entrepreneurs into a false sense of “if you do not follow our advice, you will lose.” Many conferences for restoration entrepreneurs are marketed by people who have never been super successful in quality restoration contracts but try to make themselves appear very successful to attract otherwise entrepreneurial and passionate entrepreneurs to give up their money to them.

This conference was unlike other conferences where there is a not so subtle, “if you fail to sign up and do this you will lose” type of deal. I heard entrepreneurs with tears testify of other members who came to their aid. Other members gave up their time to help others through difficulties in getting a job done or a compensation payment. The family was discussed. There was no “high pressure”. CDR did not entertain otherwise ridiculous non-experts placed on a “pay to play” scene on social media who did not deserve to be there.

A good example of this is from a lawyer who spoke before me. Neil Townsend is a young lawyer who recently switched from being a partner at a large insurance company to helping policyholders. He was a partner, meaning “successful”, rather than just another employee who could not cut it and went on to the other side. Many of these lawyers claim that “we know how insurance companies work”, but they never succeeded. Neil’s announcement was that entrepreneurs would document what others say orally and in writing. He’s right – often what is said disappears in the field of the desktop-level adjuster who has a different agenda. Neil is a new lawyer, and I was happy to finally meet him. He’s real.

The CDR conference had “Safety Bob” talks about the value of education and the employees who work for the owners. Tears came to the audience during his discussion. What is it worth to have a safety education program? But can any restoration contractor tell me about an individual case where the property insurance claims adjuster added any line costs for this? Compared to other wealth-rich conferences, how does employee safety relate to “lifting up to make millions?” The coalition has its values ​​right – money comes from doing the right things over and over again with an emphasis on the customer rather than the emphasis on registering the customer and exploiting profits.

I am against the fraudulent entrepreneurial arrangement. I do not apologize for that. Entrepreneurs in such an arrangement know that they have made a deal with the devil. In my speech yesterday, I highlighted from my book Pay!:


The Coalition of Disaster Responders opposes these types of arrangements. Audience members told me how insurance companies’ adjusters try to get some contractors to “cake in” through non-payment in the hope that the contractor can not stand a reasonable profit. I’ve been writing a lot about this lately. I feel like a priest in a confessional with restoration contractors who were previously networked by preferred vendors and apologize for what they did during these programs. Once again, the CDR opposes these arrangements.

Nathan Brooks

Nathan Brooks from Southern Cat (pictured above) helps lead this organization. He said that the spearhead of the CRD is the owner / policyholder. When you have the customer as the center of the conference rather than scaling up and utilizing to make profits, you can not go wrong in the long run.
