In 2008, I wrote a long article about what to expect after your property is damaged or destroyed in a disaster such as a wildfire, tornado, earthquake, or hurricane. Hurricane Ian’s attack on Florida and much of the East Coast has encouraged me to make the article published by the CPA Journal available by posting the link to the journal where it was published in 2017.
“At the request of the editors of CPA Journal, insurance expert Barry Zalma updated his blog for the benefit of our readers. In 2008, he wrote this article to help those facing catastrophic losses. It is reprinted here due to Hurricanes Harvey and Irma in the hope that it will help those affected by the disasters manage their claims.” It is available at https://www.cpajournal.com/2017/09/26/claims-in-a-catastrophe/
In my opinion, insurance companies dealing with a disaster will usually be in a very generous mood. They will seek good publicity by quickly and fairly taking care of the victims of the disaster. In order for the claims process to go smoothly, the insured must understand that both the insured and the adjuster have obligations when damage caused by fire, storm, flood or other insured perils is discovered.
