Berkshire partners with healthcare analytics firms

Workers’ compensation insurer Berkshire Hathaway Homestate Cos., part of Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc., announced Thursday a partnership with San Francisco-based healthcare analytics firm Clarify Health Solutions aimed at improving outcomes for injured workers.

The insurer said it plans to leverage Clarify Health’s platform, which contains claims data for more than 300 million people, to further its mission of helping injured workers find top orthopedic surgeons, reduce surgical complications and facilitate faster return to work.

Clarify Health’s platform uses machine learning algorithms to compare orthopedic surgeons in worker claims, assessing metrics such as cost-effectiveness, hospital readmission rates and post-surgery stays, according to Clarify Health founder and CEO Jean Drouin.

The information helps Omaha, Nebraska-based Berkshire find the best doctors for injured workers in its comp division, “ensuring quality care and positive outcomes,”

; Mr. Drouin in a statement.

The partnership follows a successful pilot program in 2022, according to the companies.

The insurer said orthopedic injuries are among the most common workplace injuries and many cases require surgery before an injured worker can return to employment.
