A unit of AssuredPartners Inc. is suing a former broker and the brokerage firm he established, alleging breach of an employment contract.
AssuredPartners of New Jersey LLC sued Edgar Ortiz for allegedly breaching a restrictive covenant, according to the complaint filed Monday in U.S. District Court in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in AssuredPartners of New Jersey LLC v. Edgar Ortiz and Silk Road Transportation Insurance LLC.
It charged that in September 2022, while still working for AssuredPartners, Ortiz breached his contract by surreptitiously transferring AssuredPartners’ confidential and proprietary information to his personal electronic email addresses and setting up his own competing agency, Bellevue, Iowa-based Silk Road .
The complaint says he left AssuredPartners three months later to run Silk Road.
In the trial, Mr. Ortiz for breach of contract and both him and Silk Road for contractual and future tort liability and violations of Iowa̵
7;s Uniform Trade Secrets and Defend Trade Secrets Acts.It seeks, among other things, an injunction preventing further breaches of the employment agreement and liquidated, punitive or exemplary damages.

In February, a unit of AssuredPartners Inc. sued rival brokerage NFP Inc. and its newly appointed head of professional liability, alleging he breached confidentiality and non-solicitation agreements when he left AssuredPartners last year.
