Applebee’s franchisees address EEOC discrimination targets

A Florida franchisee from Applebee’s Restaurants LLC has agreed to pay $ 100,000 to settle a sexual harassment and racial lawsuit filed by the U.S. Commission for Equal Employment Opportunity, the agency said Monday.

Under the EEOC process, two employees at a Plant City, Florida, Applebee’s restaurant run by Tampa-based Neighborhood Restaurant Partners Florida LLC verbally harassed a black employee by exposing him to racist and homophobic epithets on a consistent basis.

In addition, one of the harassers wore Confederate flag accessories while working at the restaurant, the EEOC said in a statement.

The restaurant management took no action despite the employee̵

7;s complaint, the EEOC said. He eventually tried to contact the NRP’s corporate office, after which his scheduled hours were cut and he was forced to quit, the agency said.

The company was accused of violating Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

In addition to the $ 100,000 payment, the three-year consent decree that resolves the lawsuit requires the NRP to provide specialized training on sexual orientation and racial discrimination, among other provisions.

NRP’s lawyers did not respond to a request for comment.
