American, European partners take down the hacker website RaidForums

(Reuters) – US and European authorities said on Tuesday that they had seized RaidForums, a popular website used by hackers to buy and sell stolen data, and the United States has also revealed the allegations against the site’s founder and CEO Diego Santos Coelho.

Coelho, 21, from Portugal, was arrested in Britain on January 31 and is still in custody while the United States requests that he be extradited to stand trial in the Eastern District Court of Virginia, the U.S. Department of Justice said.

The department said it had obtained court approval to seize three different domain names hosting Raidforum’s website: raidforums.com, Rf.ws and Raid.lol.

Among the types of data available for sale on the site included stolen bank routing and account numbers, credit card information, login details and social security numbers.

In a parallel statement, Europol also praised the takeover, saying that RaidForum̵

7;s online market had been seized in an operation known as the “Operation Tourniquet”, which helped coordinate investigations by US, UK, Germany, Sweden, Portugal and Romania.

“Disruption has always been a key technique for taking action against online threats, so targeting forums hosting huge amounts of stolen data keeps criminals on their toes,” said Edvardas Šileris, head of Europol’s European Cybercrime Center.

In addition to Mr. Coelho stated that two of his alleged accomplices were also in custody. It gave no further details about the other two people arrested.

Mr. Coelho is facing charges in six cases where he is accused of conspiracy, fraud with access equipment and aggravated identity theft.

It is claimed that between January 1, 2015 and his arrest in January 2022, he controlled and acted as chief administrator of the website.

“To take advantage of the illegal activity on the platform, RaidForum charged escalating rates for membership levels that offered greater access and features, including a top-level ‘God’s membership status,” the Justice Department said in a statement.

Hudson Rock, a company that monitors cybercrime, has described RaidForums as “the most important global cybercrime forum that has existed in recent years.”
