An exclusion is a provision in an insurance that refers to hazards, risks, circumstances or property that are not covered by the policy. Exceptions are usually found in the form for coverage or causes of loss used to design the insurance policy. A common exclusion is a clause that prohibits coverage for intentional loss.
In some states, such as California, a charter prohibits the insurance of intentional acts (In California, it is insurance code § 533). It should be axiomatic to pay for a deliberate loss that detracts from the purpose of the insurance, which is:

To comply with statutes such as California's statutes, insurance policies include specific exceptions to limit the coverage available to compensate for accidental or unintentional losses. However, not all manifestly intentional acts are covered by the exclusion.
