A banner year in car safety

On Wednesday, the Insurance Institute for Motorway Safety recognized 90 current model year cars as "Top Safety Choices", compared to 64 choices in 2020.

In addition to choosing its choices, measured for safety in a series of crashworthiness tests, the institute awarded 49 models, more than twice as many who received an award last year, according to the report released on Wednesday.

"With these awards, we want to make it easy for consumers to find vehicles that provide good collision protection, adequate lighting and effective frontal collision protection," IIHS President David Harkey said in a statement. "Manufacturers have taken the step to meet the challenge, and the list of good options has grown to an impressive size this year."

Of all the manufacturers, Hyundai Motor Group, including the Hyundai, Kia and Genesis brands, has the most 2021

awards – 12 named as "Top Safety Picks" with five awards. Volvo has the most awards with a total of nine. Meanwhile, only one carmaker, Mitsubishi, has failed to win a single award so far. Also noteworthy, in 2020, no minibuses made the cut. This year received two awards: Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna.
