To track the spread of COVID-19, California adopted Senate Bill 1159 in September 2020. The bill made each employer responsible for reporting employees who tested positive for the disease to their claims administrator within three days, retroactively to the 6th. July 2020 and applies until 20 January 2023. Organizations that do not meet the requirements will be fined for non-compliance.

The law's definition of an outbreak is explicit: "Positive cases in a specific location and within a specific time frame," said Leah Cooper, CEO, Global Consumer Technology, at Sedgwick Claims Management Services Inc. in Chattanooga, Tennessee. "It was not easy to calculate, for every day there may be a new case to add. And the Senate bill also required employers to use the number of employees working in one place to determine an outbreak."

159, a winner of a Business Insurance 2021 Innovation Award, as a reporting tool for his clients in California.

"This is where Sedgwick had a unique opportunity to combine the need of innovative technology with a history of strong business process and expertise, "says Cooper." We were able to take advantage of a completely new platform, our Global Intake Platform. "

To date, more than 2,000 organizations have used the tool in several industries, including transportation, retail, and healthcare.

To access the intake portal, customers were assigned unique access codes, says Jennifer DeSmedt, vice president, customer services. to customers and Sedgwick staff, she said. "We needed to make sure everyone was aware of the bill and what solution we had for them. So when a client logs on to the platform, they provide the basic information required by law," says DeSmedt.

Sedgwick customers have daily information available to them about cases that have been reported to their organization and which could potentially end up in an outbreak, she said. the information, "especially as some risk management departments may not work with their benefit team or their healthcare management team; says Cooper. "They needed a solution to be able to enter that information and track it."
