10 tips for maintenance of winter homes

Winter can be a beautiful time of year, but winter weather can wreak havoc in your home. Colder temperatures, ice and snow can cause ice dust, slipperiness and falls and other unpleasant winter-related problems. Maintaining your home properly can help keep common home problems at bay.

Use these 10 tips to help you avoid winter troubles at home and really enjoy the cool season.

1. Stop the drawbar: Repair seal around doors and windows, together with any weather protection. In addition, seal any cracks in foundation walls.

2. Check your fireplace and chimney: Have a chimney sweep check your chimney for debris or cracks and clean your fireplace.

3. Prevent ice dams: Clean the roof and gutters from sludge after heavy snowstorms to prevent ice dams.

4. Clean heating valves: Make sure that your ventilation pipes are free of all obstacles and remove all dust and debris.

5. Stop slippery surfaces: Buy salt, ice melt or sand before the snow falls. These provide extra grip for slippery sidewalks, stairs and driveways. If you have any pets, make sure you use pet-safe materials.

6. Keep entrances clean: To prevent slippery indoor surfaces, use mats and boot washers for wet shoes and boots. Place a tray under clothes hooks when drying wet items.

7. Check for leaks: Check the wind and the crawl space for signs of water leakage. Be sure to repair any leaks as soon as possible.

8. Protect your air conditioner: Place a plywood board with some bricks on top of your AC to prevent icicles and debris from damaging your condensing unit. Also remove and store all window air conditioners.

9. Switch off outdoor water: Switch off the water supply to external taps to prevent broken pipes.
